"This story is about truth, beauty, freedom; but above all things, this story is about love."
Yes, we are all familiar with that quote from the 2001 film, Moulin Rouge! – a musical romantic comedy directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby). It follows the story of a young English poet, Christian (Ewan McGregor), who falls in love with cabaret actress and courtesan, Satine (Nicole Kidman), the star of the Moulin Rouge. It was set in the year 1899, in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris.
Now the Oscar-nominated film is said to be aiming for Broadway! Titled "Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the stage show will have a book by Tony Award winner John Logan (Red) and direction by Tony nominee Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher).
There has been no casting announcement as of yet, but all the main characters have been cast. The show's opening city and opening date are also to be announced. There was also no word on whether the show would have an original score, or if it would have additional songs aside from the pre-existing pop songs the movie used.
A choreography lab for the musical is scheduled for August-September of this year. A developmental lab is also slated after for October-December. With the film's theatrical and elegant feel, we're sure to be in for a treat!
Who do you think should fill in Ewan and Nicole's shoes in this Broadway extravaganza? I personally am rooting for Aaron Tveit (Next to Normal) and Laura Osnes (Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella). A girl can dream, right? We just have to wait for further announcements.
