Thirteen seasons later, and BBC have finally announced a female doctor to take the series into its first female lead. BBC sneakily treated us to a reveal in this tweet below:
Jodie Whittaker is known for her work in the BBC drama Broadchurch. Peter Capaldi, who became the current doctor in 2014, will be stepping down after the Christmas special at the end of this year.
I'm rather excited for a female lead in this series, and look forward to see how it will pan out. According to Polygon, fans of the series have been asking for a female Doctor Who for some time, and it's nice to see BBC taking notice of the calls. I know Emma Watson will be cheering this move within her HeforShe organisation.
Now... to see what they can do with it.
